That was never my experience, though, and I would have been pretty fed up if

Yea, a lot of companies don't offer a 6V for the very reasons you mention,
im lucky that Interstate does even if its still manufactured with old
technology.

The original VW literature of 1961 claimed that the battery was only
expected to last a couple years.
