[T3] No start, no cranking...

Starter bushing? I have a brand new 6V battery now that I don’t need.... I
should really have checked that but it did a perfect impression of a dead
battery. I would have not been duped if the car had had headlights to
use....

Subject: [T3] No start, no cranking...

VW 71 FI....still won't start or even crank.  Lights strong, fuel pump does
its one-second thing.
Battery double checked---all cells in upper "good" range.

Starter---  Crossed Ignition and Battery connections---solenoid did its
jump....but, isn't that tactic supposed to START the engine?...even with key
off?

Crossed Battery and Starter connection---starter whirred, not super fast but
not like molasses either.

Starter mounting nut at right side of engine compartment, snugged up about a
fifth of a turn.
Timing + Point Gap set...just to be fussy.

Coil--- Tried a different one...no change---but would a bad coil have the
symptom of
              no-cranking?

Voltage Regulator---Would a bad one cause a no-crank situation?

Wiggled wires under dash at steering column to assure snugness.
All fuses intact and wiggled.
Switch seems to be ok as far as movement goes...and it does work to turn on
the power so that lights work.  But could it still be bad?

Remember...this problem arose when trying to start. It tried to start once
but needed more gas priming.  Second attempt it cranked again but much
weaker. Third attempt...no cranking at all.   If this is a clue to anything.
