All lead/acid batteries self discharge at some rather slow rate. How long had 
this car been sitting without being driven? If it was more than a month or 2, 
then this is a pretty normal occurance.

It's also possible that the battery had been sitting quite awhile before you 
bought it. In that case, unless you drove it regularly it may never have gotten 
back to a fully charged state.

If normal self discharge is the problem, give it a long SLOW charge, less than 
an amp. I shoot for about 100 mAmps (0.1 Amp) for about a week.  

A faster charge won't work and can actually damage the battery.
