For what it's worth, on my 73 I went through this also. T S didn't  
work because there was a build up of grease/crud/dust/etc in the  
mechanism. It took me three R&R's to get them to function properly. I  
cleaned them with WD-40 and re-greased with a light spray on lithium  
grease. It might be faster if one cleaned with an alternator cleaner.  
They worked well manually, but were a pain. Hope this help.
