You can still use the hammer, just be a bit more gentle with it. The magnets 
are inside the motor housing, so light taps or a thrown rock shouldn't bother 
them. FWIW, I've never had to use the hammer trick on one of my cars.

Bump starting, from parking on a hill, works great with our cars, unless yours 
is an AT. You can even do this with 2-3 people pushing on level ground and 
popping the clutch in 3rd gear.
