Yes first will work, but 2nd or 3rd gear is recommended as being kinder to
the transmission..

Or push it to the hill, then over the hill and jump in. l.o.l  My Father did
that when he went back to the Beetle waiting three days for me to be born. 
Apparently in the rush the dome light got left on because the door was
slightly open, I.I.R.C.. Good distance too and had not slept the whole
time.  Still amazed he was able to execute it.

Oh and first seems to work fine.  Done it with a loaded Harley and the
Squareback (Christmas parade drained the battery).
