Probably higher in sulphur (sulfur) or something added to help troopers
smell it's red diesel!

Ya I found that out after when asking some friends who live in areas where
they have it. Although for some reason it did seem different even my wife
noticed the exhaust on our TDI seemed to smell worse than usual till we got
a fresh tank of fuel. It may have just been bad in that particular station.
I was just glad I never got pulled over and tested
;-) I hear the fines are stiff.

The "Red" in the diesel is a dye. It is for easy identification purposes for
off road/agricultural use. The federal road tax is not applied/charged on
that fuel. The dye is intended to provide easy identification by Troopers
for violations. The actual fuel is the same from both pump handles. Imagine
the lawsuits that would fly if the fuels were different and an engine failed
or was damaged.

No I haven't and I hope I never do. 8-p

I suspect it would void my Jetta warrantee, which demands a certain grade of
fuel.
