Jim, 
Could the air flow be one reason that VW changed the direction of the
intake lovers on the sides from the early to late models?

It occurred to me that the problem with the Type 3 cooling air system 
(if there IS a problem) may be the length and size (conductance) of 
the cooling air intake channels. They may just be too small (too much 
pressure drop) for a much larger engine. The pressure drop would 
actually be fairly easy to measure. Might be interesting, and then it 
could be compared to a beetle and a Type 4.
