I didn't remember the non-stock carbs.

Well I have a lot of faith in scummy black coils - they're pretty reliable,
while some of the blue coils have been unreliable according to others.  The
black ones can go bad - easiest thing is to try a new one.  I ran a blue
coil (genuine German Bosch rather than modern alternative) on a Beetle, and
always got pips and hollows on the points.  It doesn't seem to happen with
the black coils.

Correct.... no chokes. Tell me what you guys think of this: I mentioned this
problem today to a guy who works on aircooled vw's, and he asked about the
coil on the car. I told him that it was a scummy looking very old black
coil. He cursed black coils and said that was likely the source of the
problem, and instructed me to get a Bosch blue coil right away. Does this
sound like good advice?
