It would be really interesting for you to disconnect and insulate the other end 
of that wire now, without disturbing anything else, and see if your problems 
came right back.   

It makes me wonder if your dist trigger points have worn to the point where 
they don't trigger properly. That usually results in poor running, but I 
haven't seen a lot of smoke with that problem.  

Did this happen in very cold weather? If so, I HAVE seen lots of smoke due to 
freezing up of the breather box on cars that had that little foam filter in 
there. I think that was only 68-9, but maybe 67 and earlier also. Those filters 
got removed and thrown away for most cars that lived in cold climates.

Russ, were those filters removed as the result of a recall?
