Well I have a lot of faith in scummy black coils - they're pretty reliable,
while some of the blue coils have been unreliable according to others.
The
black ones can go bad - easiest thing is to try a new one. I ran a blue
coil (genuine German Bosch rather than modern alternative) on a Beetle, and
always got pips and hollows on the points. It doesn't seem to happen with
the black coils.

I noticed this too, when I ran my German blue coil (before it died in
2004).I haven't noticed it since swapping to the black coil though. Today's blue
coils are hit and miss on reliability. I've seen some quit in a little
over a year, and some go longer, and some go shorter. It's up to you whether
or not you want to buy a new coil, but IF you can borrow one for testing,
then I'd try that (as a diagnostic tool). I only say that, because I've only
had 1 coil fail in 20 years of driving VW's, so it's not an often happening
thing. Like I mentioned above, I got 14 years out of my German blue coil,
and the black coin in my wire's T-3 is already 30+ years old.
