I don't think I've heard of that symptom before, but breaks in that 
little braided wire are fairly common. That wire should last forever 
if not abused, but they commonly get scrunched up so they can't flex 
uniformly, then all the stress occurs in one place until it breaks.

I shape them into a nice unobstructed loop, so they can flex over 
their entire length. If I have a broken one, I solder in a 
replacement made from braided solder wick.
