Actually, the hole for the lighter is 7/8".  I installed many of them 
back in the day.
If you are a geek, and need power for your GPS/laptop charger/DVD 
player.  You can buy aftermarket ones that screw to the lower edge of 
the dash. That is what I have in my cars.
