You should check the damper by loosening the end that attaches to the 
beam, then extend and compress it thru its full range. You should 
feel the same resistance everywhere and in both directions. Once they 
lose too much fluid, the resistance will go away as the rod extends. 
That's when it's time to replace it.  

The bulge on one end is a reservoir that allows it to lose some oil 
without losing effectiveness, but the bulge has only a certain amount 
of capacity. If you compare different makes, you'll see that the OG 
dampers have larger reservoirs.
