[T3] Axle Beams

An old motor engineer in the UK replaced his inner bushings with a special
alloy - I can't recall what it was, but it wasn't oolite as that wouldn't
have taken the stress in that situation. I've a note of it somewhere - may
be on here in the archive. He's passed on now, so I can't find out how it
lasted. You would need to be a machinist or have an engineering workshop to
do the work, so I'm sure it wouldn't be cheap.

No other VW models will fit. Eh?

Right. Like Jim said, it's not an easy job, and you'll need some jack
stands, floor jack, and maybe even a helper. Keep in mind that your existing
spindles, rotors, calipers, and steering box can/will be re-used. The big
key (besides finding a rust free one), is getting one with good inner
bushings.
I know Keith can tell you all about that, as he normally does the front end
tech sessions at the Invasion. I think ISP is working on a bushing
solution, however the material will still need to be reamed after
installation.
There's also a guy in either Oregon, or California, that used bronze
bushings to rebuild his. He found some that were close in size (still
needed to be turned down, and opened up), machined them to factory spec
(OD), then reamed them (ID) to match his trailing arms. Turned out quite
nice (he posted pics on the Samba).
