Oddly enough, with the twin carb twin vac distributor they say leave both
hoses attached, but that one is timed at TDC. I guess that would be the 7.5
deg of retard, while on the FI '72 you pull off the hose and time it on the
7.5deg BTDC mark, just as you do statically on the old Beetle.  It all makes
perfect sense now.

Odd they only used the dual vac on the twin carb for '71 model year, and
only on the FI for '72 model year.  I'd love to know why.  The dual vac
units haven't the same part numbers for twin carb and FI, but I've not
compared them to see what changed.

Hose on or off makes no difference at idle on these cars. That's true for
the advance hose on all FI Type 3 engines. It's not true for the retard
hose, if your engine has one.

Right, we got the vac retard only in '72.
