[T3] pinion gear gone-need a tranny '70 sqbk

thank you all for the expert advice on replacing my growling pinion gear.
clearly a ''new'' tranny is the way to go. 
i'm los angeles at zip 90066 and would like to find a tranny that is/was operational.  per jim adney 69 & 70 are an exact fit,  but later years are okay as well.
per mike fisher, a tranny weighs 75 lbs so shipping costs may be high.
one from just about anywhere in the southwest would be a lot better than oregon or wisconsin.
 
is there any way to tell if a junk yard  tranny is okay?  any advice appreciated,
