Hmm My 74 standard Bug is also finger operated never had a release.

I don't think so. At least it didn't come from the factory that way.

On many cars, the lock and release was broken and the release was 
done by hand from the outside, but only on '68 cars was there a 
depression to admit a thumb or finger to facilitate this.
