A friend here recommends peppermint oil, the real stuff, not the 
synthetic. He buys it at Whole foods and it comes in a small bottle.

He drills a small hole in the lid and coils up a pipe cleaner and 
puts most of it inside the bottle, with about an inch sticking out 
like a wick.

I'm skeptical of most of these remedies, but he claims to have used 
it for years, after suffering the same kind of problems you describe.
