Thanks Jim....

Well, now that it's Monday I called the place that has Brad Penn oil in my
neighborhood. He can get me the straight 30 on a special order. $78 for a
case. That includes the shipping ($66 for case, $12 shipping). He put me
on hold and asked someone in the shop what the air-cooled VW guys buy when
they come in and he said many of them use the 20w-50 (
http://www.bradpennracing.com/Products/High-Performance/SAE-20W50.aspx).

The only straight 30 he stocks is the break-in oil, which I assume I
wouldn't want to use regularly. So, back to the two options:

20w-50 is $5.85/qt.
Straight 30 is $6.50/qt.

I think I'll just special-order the straight 30. For as little oil as the
car uses, I don't find the price too offensive.
