While it's still together, I would do a leakdown test. That will tell you everything you need to know about the top end.

You can just replace these things, but you can also inspect them 
first. Your shop will prefer to replace them because that's how they 
make their profit, but I prefer to look at them first and then make 
an informed decision.

You should also check the bearing saddles to make sure the bearings 
aren't beating into them, which would mean that you need an align 
bore, and before taking the heads off or splitting the case, they 
should make sure all those nuts will torque up to spec.  

If your case has been upgraded to the 8 mm head studs, the correct 
torque is only in the Type 1 manuals. The standard 10 mm torque is 
too much.

We're all eager to learn what actually happened.
