Okay, you're talking about the Throttle Valve Switch (TVS.) On your 
'71 that has 4 wires, and that's not the right way to adjust it, 
although that's what a lot of the manuals say. (It's the right way 
for the '68-9 TVS.)

I'll send you my FAQ on how to properly adjust the TVS. It should 
have no effect on your idle, unless maybe it's way out of adjustment. 
I'm afraid the TVS is something lots of people get hung up on, but it 
is seldom a problem except for one very specific problem with high 
mileage '72-3 cars.

I wonder if your Aux Air Regulator (AAR) is working. It should give 
extra air when the engine is cold and then close down as the engine 
warms up. You can test it by removing the AAR hose at the air 
cleaner. With the engine cold and running, the idle speed should slow 
way down if you close the hose with your thumb. With the engine warm 
there should be little or no change in idle speed when you close the 
hose with your thumb. (Ignore the fact that you can still feel 
suction on your thumb.)
