Anyone driving a pre-61 Bug will have had to learn to turn the indicator off
again each time. If they were in the UK, they also had to look after the
semaphores up to 1960.

Subject: [T3] Turn Signal

It may be consoling to know that, depending on what little part of a 71 turn
signal is missing or broken, it has been possible...as my turn signal
proves...to get it working again but without the return feature that
switches it off after the turn.
It was a pain to work on.  You need about three very tiny hands, and you
have to work in a clean, limited area in case little parts go flying.
Would love to see a video on how the heck they assembled those things.
But, giving the lever a little flick after a turn to turn the signal off
becomes as automatic in a short time as changing gears.
