Agreed, if it's easy to clean off, then I see no problem with the 
full coverage approach.

The OE covers were painted only on the outside. I assume this did 
away with the possibility of paint flaking off and mixing with the 
oil. I've always stuck with this approach when repainting covers.
Have you seen any sign of paint coming off?
