I loved it over there Dave. The people I meet there were so friendly. Hope
to return for another visit some day.

I've been helping with a youth aviation stand at RAF Fairford with the
annual airshow for about 5 years, and I don't think we've had a totally dry
one yet. One was so wet, they had to abandon it for the public. The water
sluices through the marquees on the concrete apron - still, we get more
people into the tent when it rains! Airfields are often cold, windy places
over here!

I have thought about this Dave. Not sure how long the ice would last on a
100 Deg. F day with a 115 heat index. The AC on my Golf has worked very well
over the years. Those vent wings are a God send in these old vehicles with
no AC but on the hottest of days down here only help so much. One of the
times in my life I have been the coldest was in January of 91 in your
country. I had spent the last 2 years in south Florida and within a few day
I was in southern England at RAF Fairford. By the time I got use to it they
sent us to Saudi Arabia.

An interesting alternative for lower-powered classic vehicles is to have an
ice-box (literally) and re-circulate the cabin air though that!
The electric vehicle forum at
http://www.diyelectriccar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5527 suggests that.
They also confirm the 600W rating needed for electric compressors, but you
have obviously done that research already.

We don't have a serious problem over here for excessive heat, though I do
appreciate the air-con on our nearly-new Golf (Rabbit) on occasion. I
recall 110F in the Central Valley in California when over for the Oregon
Invasion, and certainly needed it there for comfort. However, the vent-wing
windows on a Type 3 are better than many modern cars to catch a breeze.

Maybe we need a chute into the airbox so we can shovel ice in there, but
check your drains first!

It would be an interesting project, but keep in mind that the generator
output is limited to 30 A total. So you probably can't count on diverting
more than 10 A to an electric A/C compressor.

The car needs the rest to run the FI fuel pump, the FI brain & injectors,
and the ignition. If you need wipers and/or headlights things get worse.

One thing I should do someday would be to measure normal current consumption
at cruising speed with various loads turned on.

The electric compressors they use on hybrids I think pulls about 50 A. Using
the stock generator would be out of the question with this unless I could
put an extra marine battery on it and charge between trips. Doubt I would
get much millage out of that. If I went this way I would have to come up
with an alternator set up putting out at least 80 A. The first concern I
would have with this is how well it would fit or seal up around where the
generator goes so there is not so much hot engine compartment air being
sucked up around it. The other would be how much of a strain would be on a
stock FI engine. Like I said this is kind of last on the list so who know I
may just drive it between early October and late April.
