The hitch in these photos has arms that reach in to the bumper
mounts, so there's little or no extra stress on the bumper itself,
but all the stress is still applied to the bumper mounts.

Does this hitch REPLACE the original bumper mounts?

This one does replace the bumper mounts (the brackets are at the ends), but
it's an early style. The one Dave linked, I'm not sure what it fits, as
I've never seen that style before.

Normally though, there are 2 plates that go with the hitch. They (the
plates) use screws to help spread out the load, and have an extra bolt hole
(uses 6 rather than 4) to mount the hitch AND bumper in place. I'm not sure if
the early style used them too, but I would hope so, as the bumper mounts
aren't really that strong by themselves. That, and they're held in place by a
couple of 8 mm bolts. :O Oh, and you're limited to 1000 lbs of towing
weight, with a max of 100 lbs tongue weight. That really limits what you can
pull.
