OK, so I DON'T have the correct distributor in it.
But what does the 311 205 905 D go to?
It's a vacuum only unit.

Why are the ZV/JCU 4 R 3 so expensive? They aren't Bosch are they?

Thanks for the info.,

Keith

Our 1964 1500S was unhappy with anything less than 100 Octane back when
new,
and even then some brands didn't work without some knocking, but I guess
octane numbers vary depending on how it's measured. In the UK we have a
super grade labelled 98 RON, but I think the US ratings are based on the
average of the MON (motor octane rating) and RON (Research Octane Rating),
so your USA 93 is probably the same.

The high compression gave greater efficiency but more sensitivity to fuel
quality.

The timing specification is 10 deg BTDC (middle mark of the 3) at 700rpm,
and the advice from VW is to pull off two spark plug leads to slow it down,
as the advance begins below normal idle speed. Maybe you've a bit more
advance than is correct. See http://home.clara.net/hallvw/type3ign.htm
which was extracted from a VW maintenance manual.

The distributor Dave is mentioning above, is the same one I have for my 64
T-34 (1500S distributor). It's a ZV/JCU 4 R 3 . This IS a 64-65 1500S only
distributor. It's an adjustable vac advance AND mechanical distributor.
You'll need to look in the Samba classifieds (not cheap), or contact Glenn
Ring (out of NY for 1(really not cheap)). I have 1 for my 64 (it's OE to
the
car), but it doesn't work (even with new parts), as there's something going

on with it. Russ rebuilt it, but I never had it in use until after he left
us.So I don't know what's going on with it. That's why I went with the
034(SVDA) in it. I still have it here, and I might send it to Glenn.

Yes, Russ told me the same thing (unplug 2 plug wires to set the timing
with it), but using the 034 I don't have to.The blue Bentley calls this out
as
well (using the 1500S only distributor). It IS a high octane (really good
fuel) only distributor though.

The low compression 1500 got a 311 905 205 E , with the F or N being used
on 66 and later 1600's.These were all vac only units.
