Unless it rusted, I don't see any way that the steel could change, 
unless you made the mistake of winding it up backwards. I think the 
problem is with our choice of lubrication; I have this problem, too. 
It's likely that some sort of dry lube would be the best choice, 
otherwise they tend to stick to each other and not want to unwind. 
When the spring is wound up tight, it doesn't take much "stickyness" 
per inch to hold the whole thing inert.  

It's possible that there was a dry lube on there from the factory and 
we made the mistake of cleaning it off without realizing what it was.
