The pulley is in 2 halves that don't have a bottom to the V-groove. 
When the VRs finally completely fail, one set of contacts in them 
tends to weld and then break. This leads to the clicking sound coming 
from the VR. When this is happening, the load (drag) the generator 
applies to the shaft and pulley has large pulses, which snaps the 
belt tight and wedges it down into the kerf of the pulley.

The eventual result of this series of "wedgies" is to fatigue one of 
the pulley halves until it fractures.

The moral to this story is, "Replace your VR immediately, if it 
starts to click."
