Perhaps an open circuit CHT sensor, which would have a similar effect, or
even the connector for it (on left-hand cylinder tinware) not connected
properly. Could even be a combination of the two.
I'd buy that (the CHT), except once the car is started again, it continues
to run like normal, unless pulling up to a traffic signal, where it tries
to stall and run like crap until cleared. He did remove the 200 ohm resistor
that was in the CHT wire, and it did help start the car once (was
installed to ballast it).
The VR was just replaced a year and a half ago, with a new older style made
in Mexico Bosch unit. Voltage readings were good (14.1 to 14.5).
