Nice to hear Wolfie is getting ready! You running 1500 jugs in that or
1600?
The Body and Paint on the Crate is DONE! Spent part of the weekend buffing
stuff out and putting some of the lights back on, the car now has some
working lights for the first time in... ever! Wolfie still running 6V?
The Crate is so I have to make sure the connections are really good!

Should have it on the road soon, its running a bit rough but it just needs
to be driven. Love to park them next to each other at the invasion being
the same Sea Blue and all but.... much more comfortable trip in the 71.

I put some pictures up on the Samba, but haven't got the latest ones of the
body all done yet.

Keith

The feeler gauge setting is only approximate, especially with used
points. The dwell meter (assuming you trust the calibration of your
dwell meter) reading is the one to follow. Sometimes it's worthwhile
to borrow another dwell meter to see if it reads the same as yours. I
calibrated mine years ago, after it had an unrelated problem. It was
right on, but they usually have internal calibration pots and it's
possible that yours has drifted.

These were new points (that I bought from you in Carthage). After
Sunday's
deal, I thought I'd replace them before heading out to Colorado. My old
points had a large gap too, but the dwell was only 45. Those points were
at
least 5 years old, and were used going to Missouri and back (Bosch
parts).
I'll look around, and see if I have another dwell meter, but the one I'm
using, I've had for over 20 years now, and it really only gets used once
or
twice a year, otherwise it sits in the cabinet. I might try the spare
distributor that I carry for road trips, just to make sure things are
working
correctly.

Well, after doing a little reading thru Bentley, I found that opening the
points, drops the dwell. Anyway, I did swap over to my spare distributor, as

I found that the vacuum can on the old one wouldn't hold vacuum. After
installing the spare, and setting the timing, WOW, what a difference. It
really woke the car up. It started up very easily, and runs smooth from
idle all
the way up to 3500 rpms. I did check the dwell on it too, and found it to
be 58 (which according to Bentley is ok for a used set of points, which it
has). The idle speed is a little higher than I'd like (about 875), but it's

so smooth that I think I'll leave it alone. Now I can concentrate on
getting the rest of the car ready to go to Colorado (finishing up some
minor
stuff, packing tools and spares, that sort of stuff).

I did try the other dwell meter I have here, and found it to be off, as it
was reading 42 (versus my normal meter's 58). I think the older unit is
probably pretty close, but if you split the difference of the readings
between
the 2, then you end up with 50. ;-)
