[T3] running rich and mystery material

My '72 Fastback has a rear mat made from the same pale grey vinyl that is
used on the airbox and inner wheel wells in the front trunk (on the higher
trim-spec Type 3s). It has a sort of 1/4" square embossed pattern, but is
not perforated basket-weave like the seat covers. There are press studs to
hold it to the lining padding and a wired edge on the back. I've not seen
anything original that is different from that, but have not really studied
the subject. Like all vinyl, it shrinks with time, and the press-studs
don't reach easily.

72 Fastbacks didn't have the black rubber mat like the Squarebacks. Mine
had a gray vinyl cover kind of like a seat cover. The trunk carpet kit we
got from ISP was black carpet to go in place of this.

Notchbacks and T-34 Ghias got the same vinyl cover too.

On both of my Notchbacks, I used a cloth floor padding material (jute
padding). The first 1 was then covered with carpet (the padding has a foil
on both sides of it though). For the other I used a hard cardboard (that
Alro steel uses for shipping stainless steel with) over the padding. That
worked pretty good too, and looks very close to OE, except for the color.
That one also got covered with a thin trunk carpet.

Yes I think mine was an odd ball as far as not having the black rubber mat
and the gray vinyl instead. I think I have seen some earlier model fastback
with the black rubber. I had a 69 FB but who ever had it before me had
ripped it out so I don't know what it had.
