[T3] Manifold gaskets

Will remove metal thin tin gaskets from top of the thicker manifold gaskets and see what happens re/ alignment and hoses and all.    How their presence can let in enough air to crank up idle speed SO much is a question.

I think i need new manifold boot hoses.   A little squeeze of one I removed showed it to be brittle, not flexible.  I heard a crack with gentle squeeze.     That's why I wanted to try another form of alternative very temporary boot hose seal (with duct tape, but not leaving glue on the metal) just to see if THAT was air-tight, problem over....thus eliminating questions about gaskets.      ASAP, I'd get real, new manifold rubber hose boots.

This is about what to know if one is on Nebraska and the nearest VW parts are thousands of miles away.   Not Proper Fix, of course, but...in a situation, what to do?

--- What kind of paper to put on both sides of the intake gaskets? Newsprint? Magazine type paper? Plain Manila?   Butcher paper? Something special or high tech?

---  What's best trick about spraying something on possible air leak areas to look for bubbles and leaks?   Some say spray brake cleaner.   What's that anyway?   Aren't brake dirty no matter what?        What about Starter Fluid?     Tried cig smoke to see air movement...but there's air everywhere.   Nothing conclusive.

---  What about Caulk?  Peanut butter?

---40 year old cars are not the same as those they TroubleShoot in the repair books.  They never say... "IF your car is 40 years old....", do this...or that...."

The correct Type 3 FI intake port gasket is phenolic, about 3/16"
thick. They originally came with thin paper gaskets glued to both
sides. I reuse them and scrape off the old paper and use new or make
paper gaskets on both sides.

The metal gasket is used alone on dual port beetles only. You'll
notice that it has an extra hole in it, which is for an alignment pin
which only the beetle heads had.

You need the correct gasket in order to get the intake runners to the
right height. That helps them align best with the IAD.

Do you have the right intake port gaskets: the phenolic ones, not the
metal ones? If you have the metal ones (for Beetles), you need to
replace them with the correct Type 3 FI plastic ones. Unfortunately,
the correct ones for our FI cars don't come in any gasket set.

You may have leaks at the big hoses, due to their having an offset
from previous careless assembly. You've taken them apart, and now the
offset is turned the "wrong" way. Hose clamps on both ends of them is
the rude and crude solution, but I would start by pulling all 4 hoses
back onto the intake air runners, then loosening ALL the bolts for
both sides AND the middle, and then moving everything around to get
the best alignment possible.

Then tighten all three up, bend the air tubes to line up, and slide
the hoses back on. At this point, the hoses will be offset, but the
joints won't be. The hoses will straighten out in time, but for now
you'll need to stop the leaks there. I'd recommend nylon cable ties;
they will do the job while still having some resilience.

In a couple years you can remove the cable ties.

That sounds like it's working correctly.
