I went tire shopping for my Variant today, and the Discount Tire down the road from here also had Kumhos available for $77 each (before mounting/balancing). This sounded like a deal after Les Schwab (big regional tire retailer in the pacific northwest) wanted $95 (tire only) for the Classics. However, digging a bit deeper...

Online you can get Nankangs for $69 shipped. I'll most likely go that route and mount them myself, balancing with Dyna Beads. The old Nankangs (different tread pattern) have served me adequately on my Bug, though they're due for replacement after 6 years and 42,000 miles. If the new ones are comparable, I'll be happy.

There are also Nexens available in 165/80-15 for $60ish delivered. I don't know anything about these tires, really, but I might give them a shot. Both of my VWs need tires, so maybe I'll get Nankangs for one and Nexens for the other and see what happens.
