All of the four-cams, (these are the Carreras and Spyders and several one-off race designs), had electric pumps to keep up with the higher revs these engines produced, (there was a good reason that the tachs went to 8K).
Also, the Porsche engineers knew that they were more reliable in all RPM ranges, including start-ups, than mechanical pumps.
And, while I'm a long-time fan of VW's, for their many innovative, creative and functional designs, (particularly the T-3's and T-2's), the Porsches were another few steps above  them in all the details.  Every day that I work on my '56 Carrera I discover another reason to smile about this and to marvel at their attention to every single piece of these remarkable cars.
