Seat belt warning chimes and interlock was a monster at first.  There was a
big silver relay that was a constant problem.  As a parts manager at the
time, I kept a big box of them on-hand because they constantly went bad.  We
also had tons of customers hat requested we remove the buzzer, which we
could not ... but did.  Same with early cats on the Rabbits.  Our mechanics
would pull them off and smash out the catalyst material so the customer
could run regular fuel.  Had one customer take an early Rabbit (carb) for a
weekend and he was letting it warm up in the driveway, the choke stuck, the
fuel blew through the exhaust and hit the cat and the car caught fire and
burned in his driveway.  He was not too pleased.  Oh the
federal requirements of the early 70s!

One of my uncles bought a new Chevy Impala in 72 the same time my folks
bought Clementine. It wouldn't start unless you buckled up. Now his Impala
is long gone but we of course still have the Fastback.
