[T3] cylinder head breather ports on a 1972 Squareback

Further info, the FI engines from U 05 02001 (Aug '71) are shown in the
parts book as having the 356 G heads, while mine is U05 03468 and I'm fairly
sure had 355 D heads before I swapped them for new universal heads, but they
may already have not been original.

No, my '72 Fasty is a FI 1600E with a twin breather box and twin vac
distributor (205 AE). It is an October '71 car, in case it makes a
difference. The April '71 Square is carbed - also with twin vac distributor
(205T).

There can't have been any hoses on the heads as I put new universal ones on
when finding the valve rock in the exhaust guides were all well over the
wear limit, and having dropped a valve in the Beetle I didn't want to repeat
that. In fact the PO did have a valve drop and used a spare engine to
replace the damaged bits - there were quite a few bits of piston in the
sump, so it wssn't a rebuild, just a repair. I don't know if there had been
different heads - presumaby at least one was changed.

Maybe the hose from the twin breather box was terminated with a rubber end
like the single cap breather. I'll take a look in daylight for signs of
hoses through the tinware and what breather arrangement is fitted, though
that may have been swapped. The engine number is appropriate and as shown
on the reg document I got, but I'll check that as well in case it's an older
engine - the FI is an E and works fine.

That sounds odd, because the microfilm shows all cars getting the breather
heads starting in '72. Are you sure those heads didn't get "lost" in an
early valve job?

Look at the cooling tin. The tin that came on those engines had holes and
rubber grommets where the hoses leading to the breather tubes would have
gone: just to the rear of #2 injector and in front of the
#3 injector.

Your '72 is carbed, isn't it? I don't know where the hose from the breather
box went on those engines. The microfilm shows that you got the late
breather box, but that the PCV valve was only for FI engines. I didn't know
that. But the microfilm doesn't show an alternative part for the carbed
engines. There HAS to be something.
Otherwise the breather box just has an open hole on the underside; there's
no way to connect a hose to that.

What's in there and where does it send the breather gases?

This is looking like some errors in the parts list.
