They're actually a circular cut out from the inner skin on mine, with the
one at the rear opened-out substantially by the inner skin pressing of the
door, partially under the door rubber.  The front is clear of the door seal
and easily visible below the hinge area, but because the inner and outer
skin is much closer together at the front corner, mine is visibly rusting
and dripping water from our recent rain-shower. 

I've attached a photo for Jim, Bob and John.

I thought they  were actual oval holes, about 1 cm x 1/2 cm, rather than
gaps between the  skins.

It's been a long time since I've looked at mine. They probably  need some
attention.
 
They're actually more of a slotted shape, but they're formed kind of like
Dave mentioned. I guess I should have taken some pics while I was in there
last week.
But Dave's also right, in that there's a small gap in the corners too.
