Brake Horse Power.

In this context, a brake is a device just like the brake on a wheel.
It's used to put drag on an engine or drive train system with a means
to measure the rate of power dissipation in the brake. Dynos consist
of a brake and its instrumentation.

What's done is to apply increasing amounts of drag until the engine
can no longer maintain its speed. The peak drag gives the max
available power at that speed.

A typical Dyno uses a pump to push water thru a valve that can be
opened and closed. The pressure drop across the valve times the flow
rate of the water gives the power. In this process the water gets
heated, so there's typically some means of cooling the water as it
flows thru the system.

Depending on the testing standard used, the brake can be applied
anywhere in the drive train.
