That's a secret! But I'll let you in on it. ;-)
In the first place, I marked where the needle pointed before I
removed it. The shaft position will be random, but I can put the
pointer back where I found it.
But, I don't trust that to be at all accurate.
So here's my plan:
I'll grab a few of the speedos I have here, with the same ratio, and
drive them with my drill press to see what speed they indicate. I
have 4 fixed speeds, so I hope I can pick one that gives me something
within the range of 30-60 mi/hr. Then I will move the needle on this
speedo until it agrees. That gives me accuracy at one speed; the rest
depends on the strength of the spring and the strength of the magnet.
Since I can be careful not to change either of those, I should be
back to the OE VDO calibration, or at least very close.
Real speedo shops have equipment to adjust the strength of the
magnet. I've watched it being done, but I don't have that equipment.
