When I bought my '68, VW claimed 27 or 28 mi/gal, but one of the mechanics
told me that this was at 55 mi/hr with no wind. I don't think I ever got
mileage that good, but I seldom drove that slowly.
In those days, highway speed limits were all at least 65 mi/hr. The
55 mi/hr limits didn't come in until the gas crisis of '73-4.

Don't mean to hijack this subject but since you brought up MPGs I was
wondering what I can expect with this stock 1600 FI in Clementine. When I
drove it in High school and technical college it had a 1641 with a
progressive weber carb for most of that time. As a lead footed teen and
young adult I would get between 19-22 mpg depending on how hard I drove her.
When dad drove it in the 70s and early 80s with the stock engine and FI he
said he got between 26-28 MPG. But I guess I will just have to wait and
see. I may be driving it more than I originally thought for the first year
or so after we get it going and I get it back. My current daily driver may
need an engine which would be more than it's worth so I driving my truck for
now to work. Fortuity I only have a 2 mile commute to work. But I do have
the usual errands around town. Just can't afford buying her back from the
school and a daily driver replacement now at the same time. I said I would
take it easy on her if I got her back from the grave but she will just have
to earn her keep for the first little bit.
