The shape of the bellows would seem to provide a fair bit of air-gap, except at the high-points.

The theory was that it would act primarily to reflect the radiant heat coming from the exhaust, an idea based on some research done by Howard Washington. Howard also wrote the article which appeared in the May 2006 Hot VWs. Maybe someone has a copy.

Anyways, I took it off two years ago, apparently to no ill effect. So it's hard to say how well it worked.
