Yea, that makes sense.  Now Ill have to find one locally if I want to drive
it next week.... Hmmm, My favorite family run FLAPS didn't make it thru the
winter so mighty thin pickins for early VW stuff these days.

I believe it's essential. Without it, the pushrod can tilt and fall 
off the cam on the dist drive gear and fall down into the case. I 
probably have one somewhere, but it should be an easy part to find 
locally, since all beetles used the same part.
