But I often hear members who knew Russ Wolfe say: "Russ talked about this
or that."
Although I never met him, he apparently took a wealth of knowledge, from
his years of experiences with Type 3's, with him, when he passed.
R.I.P., Russ.

Yes, Russ took a LOT of valuable knowledge with him. I'm just glad I was
able to get the bits and pieces of info that I got. Add in he was a good
friend, and would help anyone, made him special.
Having been dealer trained, he saw these cars when they were new, and
repaired them at the dealership. According to him, installing AC units after
hours was good extra money for a struggling family man (he made a 100 bucks
on each, and would do 2 a night). He knew most of the "short cuts", and was
always finding ways to improve. As he would always tell us, back then VW's
were for flipping, not keeping (he bought and sold over 40 of them back
then). :O He made good money buying and selling these cars.
He probably forgot more about these cars, then most people will ever learn
in their lifetime about them.

As for writing a book, I don't think you could do it, without it being about
5 or 6 inches thick. Don't get me wrong, Bentley does a good job of covering
stuff (both Blue and Brown Bentleys), but it also assumes that the vehicle
is only a couple of years old, not 40+ years old, and parts still available
thru the dealer. Now, here we are 40+ years later, the dealer doesn't stock
parts (unless it's still used today), and the aftermarket parts are hit and
miss on quality and fit. There's no way you could accurately describe
fitting a part (like Bentley does), and have an aftermarket part fit
correctly. Somethings yes, but not everything. Just my take on it.

Wow! I was just thinking the same thing this past week Bob. On the repair
of the leaky oil pump while reading the Bentley to get some torque specks.
The Bentley was written for a late model car with a dealer to back them up
not a 40+ year old car with a hodge podge of aftermarket, NOS, rebuild, and
used/junk yard parts. Kind of like the How to Hotrod your VW book( would
read that book a lot as a teen). A lot of the aftermarket parts in that book
are long gone but a lot of good info still. In looking back the last 3
years of restoring a basket case T-3 I could not of dreamed of leading these
kids through this without this forum. Russ was very helpful the first year
we started with info. When he found out what we were doing he told me he
wanted to do his part to get knowledge to the next generation. I'm sorry I
never got to meet him in person.
