Not a war, but its get's everyone awake and its good to see that some of the
Lurkers are still out there and on the list, FI and Carb! Spices things up!

You might want to give your mechanic a Bentley... the thing that bothers me
the most these days is that unless you live in Sandy eggo most mechanics
never see a single carburetor anymore, how can they stay in business if they
don’t know FI? to work on any modern era car require some significant
smarts and lots of training, not just in diagnosis but in understanding how
complex modern closed loop FI systems work. I find that many of the best
automechanics today come out of the military, the army, the Navy or better
yet, the coast guard :-) and even though they are not familiar with our
ancient systems, a half hour with the Bentley and a light bulb should go
off... "oh, this is simple enough!" because compared to the modern day
stuff, it really is.

Yea, you cant plug in an OBD and get an answer but a simple VOM and tracing
out only 30 wires and you can do it manually. Intermittants are still a
PITA, but parts can be had cheap thru Ebay, the Samba, or folks on this
list, plus the mechanic can use THIS LIST as a resource, All modern era
mechanics are web-enabled and constantly use Web resources to track down
difficult problems or look for previous solutions to symptoms they are
seeing.

Answer yourself this question, would you bring your 2010 Golf GTI to this
guy for an intermittent engine problem?

Keith

Geez, I feel like I started a war. Thank you for all your input. I am going
to sift through it all and send my mechanic the information. He's particular
about doing the job well and has been impressed in the past with information
I've sent him from all of you. He says you are "wise men". :) I don't want
him to feel insulted, so I will make sure he gets all the pertinent
information without the personal comments. Thank you again!
Terrie Ann
