It's a weird installation. You have to put it on with the speedo flat on the table to apply proper pressure, but you can't tell if it's balanced properly until the speedo is vertical like in the dash. What I did was to lightly place the needle on the shaft horizontal and then bring it up. You have to install it in a location like 10 mph so it then drops down to just lightly rest at the zero point. Ideally I think it needs to just rest on the stop.

I took a small plastic container and cut some holes to allow the parts of the speedo to protrude down. I used this for both storing the speedo and for installing the needle horizontally.

By remembering at what location you installed it (5 mph, 7 mph, etc.) when horizontal and what vertical location it resulted in you end up doing an iterative installation. The needle isn't perfectly balanced, it's weighted more on the long side.

Then you have to take it to the road to check it again. If you place it too low, the needle slams into the stop post and can pop off (at least in the lightly installed position). If you have a smart phone to check, great. If you don't, like me, I just winged it based on experience on a familiar road in familiar conditions.

What you cannot do multiple times is install the needle behind the stop and then lift it over the stop. It can be done, but it is really, really risky and highly discouraged. Those needles are brittle.
