Intersting, and that was an AT starter, with the bushing integral to the
unit. Well iVe used 2 different starters with the same problem, Im
wondering if maybe it's the flywheel? Hopefully Ill get some time to noodle
with it this week before winter returns again, (hopefully without snow this
time)

Im wonderin if letting the engine throw the bendix loose is causing any
problems? Id think not although its not the ideal situation.

Keith

I had the same problem more than 30 years ago, in a '71 AT. I never
managed to figure it out, in spite of taking the starter apart upteen
times. This was in the dead of a brutal Wisconsin winter; it was -20
F, and I could only work outside, in the dark, for 2-3 minutes before
my fingers froze. It was probably the worst repair experience I've
ever been thru.

I finally gave up and exchanged the AT starter for a Bosch rebuild.
That cured the problem. I've always wondered what the root cause
might have been, but to this day I really don't have a clue.
