Well, not worth pulling the block out, but I do plan to sandblast the area,
epoxy the hole, seal it and put a stainless coverplate over it and hold it
on with rare-earth magnets, this should hold up to the pressure, if it
doesn't the kid down the street will get the car, I have another car I can
get to replace it and I have another project going on next summer so I don't
have much time to spend with the Golf.  I think the more permanent repair
should hold, if it works in the summer heat that should be a good test.

I was gonna ask about that, hadn't seen anything on the subject in a 
while.  Ultimately you're going to have to replace the block -- it isn't 
going to *stop* rusting -- but if you can put it off until the 
temperatures are above freezing, great.
