The ones I've seen were the bolted style, but it made cleaning the 
strainer a real pain. I suspect that in the long run they did more 
harm than good, because people would just drain the oil without 
checking the strainer. (There was an opening in the center so you 
could still remove the drain plug.)

VW deleted the center drain plug in '73, partly to save money, and 
partly to "encourage" people to clean the strainer.
