Just heard of this matter today...about a new combo of ethanol and
gasoline called "E 15" that can really mess up the engines of cars, except for
"flex-fuel" cars, that may use it. Story caught my eye because it involved
"Older Cars"...which some of us are familiar with.
This debate has been going on for about 3 1/2+ years now. Both the SAE
(Society of American Engineers) and SEMA (Specialty Equipment Manufacturers
Association) have BOTH been lobbying AGAINST this, due to the fact that 1)
All vehicles built before 2002 would receive engine damage, and 2) the gas
companies (service stations) would have to install a new fuel pump (and tank)
just for it. :O Considering that there are only about 6 years of vehicles
that were produced that can safely use it (not counting the "flex fuel"
vehicles), it really seems like a bad idea.
But we all know how that works with our government, if it's a bad idea,
someone will make money off it, if it becomes a law (think greased palms for
elected officials, the ethanol industry, more farm subsidies, fuel tank
and pump installation companies, etc...). I guess that's supposed to help the
economy, in that it'll "put people to work", but we all know what a crock
that statement is. (insert rolling eye icon here)
But, IF it does pass, there will be another new pump at the filling
station, that you'll have to pay attention to, that you don't use (like the
diesel pump when driving your gas engine car). ;-)
